In 2020 I started Good Jobs Report.

I bought a cheap .report domain name, created a truly uninspired “logo”, signed up for a Substack account, and sent out 10-15 jobs every couple weeks. My goal was to help some friends, who’d been let go during pandemic, find jobs. If I was looking for jobs for them, why not everyone else?

I thought I’d do it for a few months, then those months turned into almost three years. Those friends who had lost their jobs during the pandemic have found new ones. I doubt they even read this anymore.

Still, I decided to keep Good Jobs Report going. The occasional thank you or “I got a job I found in your newsletter!” from a reader motivated me to keep the ritual going. I also appreciated all the colleagues that have used this as a way to keep in touch — Hi Brik, Hi Holly. 👋

As I reflect on 2023 and plan for 2024, I realized I’ve done what I wanted to with this project. I don’t dislike putting this together, but there are opportunities and projects I’m more excited to explore and spend time on.

So this is the last one.

I want to thank all of you for reading the Good Jobs Report. It’s been absolutely rad to see the reader count grow over the years with nothing more than word of mouth. [Quick stat: 2000 people read the last newsletter. I barely know 20. Who are you people??]

So what happens to the Good Jobs Report?

Literally nothing… for now. I tend to leave my side projects up for as long as possible [laziness]. In time, something usually breaks, a domain expires, or a service shuts down and the project disappears. I don’t expect Substack to shut down, so you can continue comb through thousands of expired job links for the foreseeable future if you’re a weirdo like that. I’ve been mentoring a handful of new and soon-to-be grads looking to get their first job. In chatting with them, I’m realizing I don’t know how to help them.

These are new designers with impressive portfolios with internships at companies whose apps you probably have installed on your phone.

One has experience with design and conducting research. Another can define the user experience and write the frontend code… a “unicorn” as the Silicon Valley goobers like to say. But they are struggling. Dozens and hundreds of applications submitted. Dead-end calls with recruiters. Take-home projects that end with automated rejection emails.

My suggestions for them always start with this:

• Rely on your network. If you don’t have one, start NOW. Attend meetups, events, and conferences in your city. Reach out to people you’d like to work for or with. The best way to get a foot in the door is to know someone on the other side of said door.

• Have a strong portfolio with 2-3 case studies that articulate the problem, the solution, and how you got to there. It should be concise, interesting, and easy to understand by your mom most people. Bonus points for what impact the work had to the project, team, company, etc.

• Practice interviewing. I’ve written about this before: Practicing lets you learn what works and what doesn't so you don’t have to figure that out during the interview for the job you really want.

So I come to you, reader, what did you do to get your first job after school? Beyond luck and maybe good timing, what are the books, tools, or websites you used? What are the mindsets, hacks, or strategies that worked well for you? Conversely, what are things that didn’t work or weren’t worth the time? Oh and they don’t have to be specific to designers. All tips for all roles are welcome.

If you’ve ever worked in software you’ve probably heard the term low-hanging fruit. It’s the work out there that is quick and ready to go. You and your team can knock out a bunch of low-hanging fruit work in a day or two. While easy, it’s often not very fruitful in helping reach the goals the team is working toward, especially if that’s all you ever do.

My wife and I spent a few hours in upstate New York picking apples.

We drove to a quiet town and took a quiet backroad to a very busy apple orchard on the side of a hill. There were lines of bushy apple trees as far as the eye could see.

(Also, it was also like 95 degrees which completely ruined the fall vibes.)

This one apple tree was surrounded by fallen mushy apples, which were really satisfying to step on, but totally ruined my shoes. (Yes, I am a child.) Anyway, the lower part of the tree had a couple of apples, but most of them had either fallen or been picked. The top of the tree was filled with bunches of beautiful pink and red apples.

As someone who has grown tired of the digital low-hanging fruit diet, I decided to go for the real high-hanging stuff. I climbed, stretched, and jumped to get a few of those precious apples.

I imagined them these apples would be the best I’ve ever had—juicy, sweet, and maybe even »life changing«.

I started to empathize with Adam and Eve… an apple could really be that good?!

I took a bite of one of those high-hanging fruits.

It tasted like nothing. Wet, waxy, herbaceous nothing.

I reached over and grabbed a low-hanging apple off the same tree, took a bite, and it also tasted like nothing.

Sometimes all of the fruit on the tree is bad.

Last week I was chatting with someone who’s retiring.

They are retiring today, actually.

As someone who has a few decades of Work™ still ahead of him, I asked if they had any advice.

They said two things:

1. I’m retiring because the thought of it is exciting. If I was scared or sad, I wouldn’t be retiring.

2. I wish I hadn’t obsessed over work. In the end it was not that important. I wish I pursued more hobbies. I’m spending my retirement finding one.

I’ve never really figured out résumés.

I’ve written dozens and read thousands. I’ve paid a professional résumé writer to make one for me (it was fine). I’ve asked ChatGPT to edit mine (also fine). Each time I finally get to a new version I’m left feeling indifferent. As my college design professor used to say, “That was a long walk for a taco.”

Then there’s a bunch of rules about résumés that some are oddly passionate about…

It’s gotta be one page. If it’s more than one we don’t even look at it.

Don’t use bullets!

It needs to be created in Microsoft Word so the machines can read it.

I wish I had all the right answers to crafting the perfect résumé, but I don’t. What I do want to call out are a few things to try in the next résumé you write. (This also works for LinkedIn pages too!)

Speak to impact: Not just what you did, but what did it affect. The impact could be increasing profits or getting new customers, but it can also include positive changes to your direct team or department. For example, establishing a customer research process for your team creates better products and removes risk. That’s impact. Include it.

Clarity over lingo: Résumés are reviewed by a handful of different disciplines, many of them non-technical—recruiters, HR. Also, the language and terminology used at one company may drastically differ from another. Best approach is the avoid trendy buzzwords and internal lingo. Strive for a résumé a non-techy friend can read and have a good sense of what you’ve done and can do.

Show a bit more of you: Hiring managers review dozens, even hundreds, of résumés during the process. All the résumés start to mush together. Try including a little more about you as a person. In the intro summary, speak to what you are most passionate about, a goal you have, or a side project you’re proud of. Have a sense of humor? Punch up the résumé with a fun line or two. Watercolor painter? Throw a little flourish in the corner. Don’t go overboard, but one to two of these things can say a little more about you while separating you from the mushy pack.

A number of time units ago I was on a difficult call with a colleague. The company I was working for was going through some truly trying times. Lots of poor decisions. A supreme lack of focus. Constant jumping from fire to fire. The team was burning out. As was I. Someone on the team told me they cried one day. Another told me they’d been dreaming about work. Awful.

During the call, this colleague and I were talking about how we get out of this mess. My colleague’s approach was to tell people it will get better… be optimistic… inspire… motivate them to push through… be the football coach in the locker room at half-time giving the passionate speech about how the team is going to come back from the absolute blowout of the first half. “Clear eyes. Full hearts. Can’t lose.”

It’s honestly not a bad approach. I just thought it was missing something.

My approach was to first fess up. Put it all out on the table. Say we fucked up. My boss at the newspaper I worked at in college—Hi Shawn!—used to call this a “Come to Jesus” moment. A time to dwell and articulate and talk about the problems instead of ignoring and pushing forward blindly.

My colleague’s response to my approach: “I don’t do vulnerability. You and I can talk about it, but this isn’t something I want to share with the team.”

I honestly don’t know who was right in their approach. I’ve read enough Forbes and Bloomberg articles to know that the Silicon Valley big wigs would never show their cards in the way I was suggesting. So maybe my colleague knows something I don’t?

What I can say is, some of the moments in my career I find most meaningful are where I’ve missed the mark, told those around me I screwed up, and then was immediately drowned in their help and support to fix it.

Most good humans want to help and they are particularly great at helping when you’re open and honest about the situation.

I also know that these failures make really great stories a few years later. Just last week I told my current team about the time we redesigned a popular feature only to find out we missed an important use case. We were getting messages in our support channel that were brutal. One customer wanted my name so they could send me a book on design. A gut punch at the time, but funny in retrospect. We fixed their concerns in following iterations. The story still goes over well whenever I tell it. It’s comforting to know others fuck up sometimes too.

To this day, my aunt tells me about the time I put a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in the slot of her brand new VCR. It was the mid-90s, and VCRs were expensive. It was even more expensive to have some poor repair person swab and wipe out the Smuckers and Skippy.

To this day, my grandmother tells me about the time—also mid-90s—I turned on all of the baseboard heaters at her house… in the heat of the summer. I don’t recall doing this, but turning those knobs does sound pretty cool.

Fast forward to today. I have a child roughly the same age as I was back in the day…

Sophomore year of college I took a web design class at 8 a.m. … on Fridays. I remember that first week of class. It was January and we were in the middle of a stint of fucking frigid weather. It was in the negative degrees most mornings, and windy, the sharp kind that penetrated through any and all clothing. Might as well have been naked. My apartment was nearly a mile to the administration building where the class was being held… uphill almost the entire way—yes, just like when the olds talk about getting to school back in the day.

The first week of classes had about 20 students. So did the next week. Then it dropped to 15. Ten the week after. And after two months, it was just me and the professor. His name was Frank.

Frank was an interesting guy. He was a shorter man with messy grey hair. He smelled of cigarettes and cologne, and the cigarettes were winning. He didn’t really care about grades or assignments. He liked helping people work through a problem. He liked people who were curious and motivated.

On those days when it was just Frank and me, he wouldn’t get out his computer, nor would I turn on mine. We rarely talked about web design or code. He’d ask me about my future and what I was interested in, and he’d give me advice in the form of stories from his past. He’d tell me about the spice trade, flower farming, and how Dell computers came to be… to list just a few. He had an endless bank of stories. I believe most of them were true.

We’d talk through the entire class time and then move outside, where he’d light up a cigarette and we’d talk some more. There are few people in my life that are interested and able to devote some much time to conversation.

The class ended that spring. I got an A. I did absolutely nothing.

We ended up keeping that tradition over my junior and senior year. I’d catch him lighting up and we’d chat for a couple hours about the most random things. I’d show him something I was working on and he would trash it, in a nice way, and list a bunch of other ideas and options.

Fast forward to spring of my senior year. I was a month out from graduating. I found Frank one last time. I thanked him for all of our time together. I sensed he didn’t know how to take it, so he moved past it by bringing up another topic. During that conversation he left me one more piece of advice, and I’m paraphrasing because he said “fuck” a lot, but he said, “Go after the things that you are curious of. The money and fame may come, but fulfillment comes from pursuing things you don’t understand but want to.”

He passed away a couple years after that. It has continued to be good advice.

I have this pretty bad habit of working late into the night. I might be working on work work or house work or side project work. (Like this newsletter.)

Then when I try to go to bed, I can’t, because my mind is still going a million miles an hour so I end up falling asleep a couple hours after I should.

This deficit of sleep turns me into an grump monster (what my wife would describe as An Asshole™) in the morning which then bleeds into the afternoon. The grump monster then becomes the norm and I, and the people around me, suffer. It’s fun.

But I’ve been working on it.

A friend of mine—not Ed Sheeran—turned me on to habit tracking. He had some bad habits he was trying to break and suggested I give it a try too. [Side note: I grow violently ill when someone suggests self-help content. Mostly because I find the people who talk about it insufferable… wait… am I that guy now?]

I’ll cut to the chase.

I set a goal of stopping all work before 9pm every night. Over the the past 5 months I’ve been tracking my progress with this confusing and over-designed app called Way of Life. Here’s how it’s going:

It started out a bit rough. The first couple months I was averaging about two nights per week of working late, which might not seem like a lot but they bleed into each other and poison the entire week.

Then around April the trend started to shift. Since I had written down the goal and tracked progress every night, I felt like I had good reason to say no and stop working. Pretty cool! Striving for zero next.

This new habit does come with side effects. I find myself going to bed earlier. I also find myself watching more TV (anybody watching Dave or Attack on Titan?) and buying more LEGO sets to build before bed.

In three parts

Part 1: A couple months ago

A designer reached out to me and asked if I thought she was going to be fired.

She told me her situation… she’s at a large corporation working on a very small piece of a product of which the company had a few dozen. She was struggling to make any impact and losing motivation.

On top of that, the people she originally interviewed with were not the ones she was working with every day. Her manager lacked experience and was stretched thin. She wasn’t getting the guidance she needed and, admittedly, wasn’t interested in putting the work in to fix things, at least not anymore. She’d been having fewer calls with her manager as time went on. When they did meet it was transactional and only seemed to make things worse.

She was visibly defeated and lost. It felt like a giant black rain cloud hanging above both of us.

I asked her a few open-ended questions:

• Is this salvageable?

• Is it worth salvaging?

• What would make you enjoy work again?

I did not tell her if I thought she was going to be fired. Who am I to know that? But I could tell emotionally she’d already quit and was in a holding pattern until something changes.

Part 2: A couple weeks ago

I hopped on another call with the designer. This call was very different.

She’d been laid off.

I couldn’t tell that by her demeanor though—she was smiling, laughing, and present. She was on the floor playing with her infant son as we chatted.

She told me the layoff pushed her into a change she needed to make a long time ago. The stress of a job she hated weighed on her. It made her a different person.

She was going to enjoy a short break and start looking again.

Part 3: A couple days ago

I jumped on another call with her this week.

She told me she had a handful of interviews already and had more on the way. She’s also doing her due diligence this time. Making sure she’s at a place where she can see impact. Working at a company with people who will support her. And running the f*ck away from any place that remotely smelled of her last employer.

The person from part 1 doesn’t exist anymore. I hope it never returns.

A job can change a person for better or worse. Seek the former.

I have this friend. His name is Chet.

[His name is not Chet. I swapped it out as to not identify him, but if you’ve worked in Boise for any amount of time you may know who I’m referring to.]

I’ve gone to lunch with Chet a number of times. Every time we go I’m amazed at how many people walk up to him and say “Hey!” or wave.

I’ll be housing a gyro or burger and Chet will be small talking with his daughter’s best-friend-from-middle-school’s mom or an ex-colleague he hasn’t seen in 5 years. That person will move on and Chet will say something to me like, “That was Schmidt Hofferson, he invented the in-door refrigerator ice dispenser. We worked together on a project. Love that guy.” Some conversation like that will literally happen 2-3 times during lunch.

Between you and me, I’m a bit jealous. Not because Chet knows Schmidt Hofferson, but because he just seems to know everybody.

[Schmidt Hofferson is made up for this story, but I’m sure someone had to invent the in-door refrigerator ice dispenser.]

Chet has been at it for awhile—at least two decades living and working in the Boise area. He’s volunteered, taught classes, done favors, bought lunches, connected people, listened, helped people get jobs, mentored. He just cares… a lot… and often.

The little things Chet does over years and years, decades and decades, compound into a reputation—a good one. I’ve never asked him, but I imagine there’s gratification and safety in that. Feeling like you have a network to rely on when you need it. It’s impressive.

I can’t say I’ll ever be like Chet—he’s better at small talk than I’ll ever be—but I try hard to care and help out when I can. Here’s to hoping one day, maybe in a decade or two, I’ll be interrupted while eating my lunch.

A friend recently asked if I had noticed any changes in the number of jobs out there, you know, with all the recent layoffs.

To answer my friend’s question: No.

I spend a couple hours each week reviewing and compiling jobs and there’s a metric sh*t ton of them and that’s even after I remove the sketchy crypto ones. Compare this to early pandemic, say this time in 2020, where it took me forever to find just 5-10 good ones.

I chalk it up to a couple things:

1. Remote work has become much more the norm. More companies are going remote which means more opportunities available to those not living in tech cities. This is great news for us Boise people.

2. Big tech has been hoarding talent for over a decade. Now that they are loosening their grip and realizing how inefficient that is, it’s giving everyone else the chance to snap up good people.

There are a few things I have noticed about the jobs lately:

• Junior and associate jobs pretty much do not exist right now. It’s rough out there for those starting out. Help them in whatever way you can… like hire them.

• Mid-level jobs are also hard to come by. I try to have a diverse selection of job levels in the newsletter, but these days most of them start with senior.

• Marketing jobs have slowed to a trickle as companies have tightened or cut budgets. They are harder to come by with far more applicants. I found an ad campaign manager position posted a week ago that already had 600 applicants. Oof.

• Listing compensation within the job post has become more of the norm. This is rad! You’ll notice I’ve been putting pay ranges next to jobs when I can find them. That was rare just a couple years ago. Also, the comp for that backend engineer gig at Netflix is not. a. typo.

My mentoring gig has picked up over the last couple months. Lots more mock interviews and portfolio reviews. I chalk it up to people looking for something new in the new year and the layoffs in the tech sector right now.

During mentoring sessions I’ve heard a number of yellow and red flags from those actively interviewing. Thought I’d provide my commentary on a few:

🟡 Complicated take-home assignments. If you have to do one, keep it under 1-2 hours. Even better, ask for an in-person whiteboard session instead. You’ll get a sense for the caliber of the team and the culture too.

🟡 So. many. interview. steps. A sign of an inefficient and indecisive team. A sneak peek at what it’ll be like working there.

🟡 Hiring team responds late at night. If you’re getting emails from someone at 8:45pm, it’s very likely working late and/or responding to emails at all hours is the norm. If that’s not for you: RUN.

🔴 Doing a take-home assignment, but not being able to present it. You put the free work in, the least they can do is give you time to present your decisions. I’ve heard too many people get the auto-generated “Thanks, but no thanks” email after submitting their assignment. Gross.

🔴 Working for free. Even for a short period is a waste of your time. Most tech internships pay these days. Get that $$$.

🔴 The boss talks bad about the team. Bringing up potential gaps or weaknesses of the team is one thing. Calling specific people out and/or hoping you’ll “save them” by joining is super concerning. 😬

Remember, an interview is just as much of a time for you to assess the job and team as it is a company assessing you.
