Constraints

© KIN

Over the holiday break a friend invited me to a meal at KIN.

If you haven’t been it’s an amazing and special dining experience. The food is inspired by a fine artist whose work is hanging up on the walls as you eat. Each new course comes with a story from the staff with an ingredients list as long as this newsletter.

It’s lovely, novel, and prohibitively expensive (but worth it IMO). Whenever I go I have a near-religious experience where I feel more connected to people… but maybe that’s just my fine arts degree speaking.

Anyway, I’m getting off track.

The meal ended and the other patrons grabbed their jackets and trickled out to their cars. I stayed back and got to chat with KIN’s head chef Kris Komori. I asked him how long it takes to plan out these intricate meals, as well as source all the ingredients.

I just assumed he and his team spent months meeting with the artist, gathering ingredients, iterating, and experimenting. The food was next level. How could they not?!

His response was a braggishly casual: “Uhhh… a couple weeks.”

Kris followed up by saying his team doesn’t have the luxury of time. They work with the ingredients they have on hand and make something beautiful (but simple) in just a few days.

It was a reminder to me that constraints are a good great thing. The 2000+ well-intentioned side projects I’ve started over the years, but never completed, lacked constraints. Is that simple website I launched over a weekend better than the full-featured, multi-page one that never left my sketchbook? Sure is.

As you start this new year with goals or projects, add some constraints, and do something you’re proud of, however small it may be.

Onward,

Loren Morris

P.S. SheTech, one of my favorite events, is happening January 31st at College of Idaho. The organizers are looking for volunteers. I’ll see you there!
