No smart assholes
In 2016, I started at TSheets as a Product Designer. The company was in hyper-hiring mode. I swear 30% of my job between 2016–2018 was interviewing. I loved it. To this day I still enjoy interviewing people.
One of the hiring principles we all stood by was “no smart assholes”. Said more elegantly: A smart, but toxic person was not welcome on our team. We weren’t willing to compromise our culture to bring in some super genius.
No smart assholes has been something I’ve carried with me to every job since TSheets. People get a foot in the door with their experience, but only get key to the door by showing they truly care about others.

P.S. In writing this post I stumbled upon the book The No Asshole Rule by Robert Sutton. I’ve got some reading to do.
