A couple jobs ago, I had the opportunity to interview hundreds of parents over the course of a year â specifically new and first-time parents.Â
It was incredible. It shaped the way I parent my daughter.
One major takeaway I had from those interviews is that advice from the parent of a child only a year older than yours wasnât all that helpful. Five years older: Meh. Twenty years older: Pretty bad, maybe even dangerous.Â
The best advice came from parents who had a child just 3-6 months older. Their advice was specific, actionable, and not yet muddled by our rosy recollection of the past.
Anyway, I bring all this up because mentoring has a similar dynamic. An experienced designer with 10 years or more experience under her belt giving advice to a new grad might be helpful, but the most useful advice often comes from someone just a few steps ahead. They just walked the path with the slippery rocks, the steep cliff, and the poison ivy. They can provide the most direct information to help you avoid making their mistakes.
The person way up at the top of the mountain might not remember exactly where that cliff was â or worse, maybe they took a path that was harder and more painful than it needed to be.
Consider mentoring. No matter what stage of your career. Someone out there is two steps behind, a little bit scared, and looking for some useful advice.
