Good Jobs #74: Rest in peace 🪦

A few years ago my wife and I visited Savannah, Georgia. Neither of us had been before, but it definitely lives up to the hype. Beautiful and historic. Good food… mostly (I tried camel and would not recommend). It’s got cool spooky vibes at night and you can carry and sip on an adult beverage anywhere in the city. 🍹

During our visit we toured a very old cemetery. One of the oldest in the country. A tour guide walked us through the hundreds of gravestones and mausoleums, most of which were being slowly eaten by vines and mosses.

The tour guide even explained what the bells were for.

About halfway through the tour we came upon this gravestone…

It might be a little hard to read:

Martha A. E.
Wife of James Kirksey.
Born February 28, 1824.
Died October 1, 1889.
She did what she could.

That last line — she did what she could — made the group snicker. I remember someone in the group asking the tour guide if it was meant as sarcasm. The tour guide said no and that it was a pretty common statement people would include on gravestones during that time.

And she was right. We saw a few more gravestones with that line as we wrapped up our tour.

Looking back, the fact that we laughed might say more about us than it does the people of 1889. We live in times where more and more is expected of us. Doing what you can is often not enough! Do your job and someone else’s. Learn how to design AND code. Automation and robots are coming for you. Work the 8 to 5, then hop back on to hack away at that side hustle before bed.

Anyway, I’m working on living a life like ol’ Martha. Doing what I can and accepting that it’s enough. Closing the laptop lid after a days work and focusing on family and friends.

And being okay that this story doesn’t conclude as nicely as I was hoping for. 😜
