Good Jobs #85: Good reputation

My friend Chet
I have this friend. His name is Chet.
[His name is not Chet. I swapped it out as to not identify him, but if you’ve worked in Boise for any amount of time you may know who I’m referring to.]
I’ve gone to lunch with Chet a number of times. Every time we go I’m amazed at how many people walk up to him and say “Hey!” or wave.
I’ll be housing a gyro or burger and Chet will be small talking with his daughter’s best-friend-from-middle-school’s mom or an ex-colleague he hasn’t seen in 5 years. That person will move on and Chet will say something to me like, “That was Schmidt Hofferson, he invented the in-door refrigerator ice dispenser. We worked together on a project. Love that guy.” Some conversation like that will literally happen 2-3 times during lunch.
Between you and me, I’m a bit jealous. Not because Chet knows Schmidt Hofferson, but because he just seems to know everybody.
[Schmidt Hofferson is made up for this story, but I’m sure someone had to invent the in-door refrigerator ice dispenser.]
Chet has been at it for awhile—at least two decades living and working in the Boise area. He’s volunteered, taught classes, done favors, bought lunches, connected people, listened, helped people get jobs, mentored. He just cares… a lot… and often.
The little things Chet does over years and years, decades and decades, compound into a reputation—a good one. I’ve never asked him, but I imagine there’s gratification and safety in that. Feeling like you have a network to rely on when you need it. It’s impressive.
I can’t say I’ll ever be like Chet—he’s better at small talk than I’ll ever be—but I try hard to care and help out when I can. Here’s to hoping one day, maybe in a decade or two, I’ll be interrupted while eating my lunch.
