Should I include a cover letter?
“Nobody reads them.”
“They all say the same thing.”
9 out of 10 cover letters suck.
Most are cookie cutter nothingburgers that look like a lot, but don’t say much of anything.
So should you write one?
Yes, but it has got to be good.
Some tips for writing a good cover letter:
Research the company and the people that work there. Look at their website and LinkedIn company page. See if you can find the hiring manager or the head of the department you would be working for. Maybe they grew up in the same town you grew up in. Boom, connection!
Have a good reason for wanting to work there. Just saying “for the money” is true, but it’s not going to leave any lasting memories inside the interviewer’s head.
Delete your cover letter template. If you really want the job, start from scratch each time. Tell a story. Show you’ve done your research on the company (See #1). Speak to the reasons you want to work there (See #2, [don’t say money!]) and how your strengths could benefit the business. Make it unique and personal. Write something a hiring manager would want to read after wading through a sea of .pdf form letters.
