The art of the remote interview

Okay… so The Good Jobs report is back in email form. After last week’s snafu I think we’re back to normal… fingers crossed. I’ve moved the newsletter over to Substack. It’s just fine.

Since we’re all getting the hang of working remote, I wanted to share a couple of remote interview pointers I’ve found helpful over the years:

Wear headphones: Video conference software has gotten better about handling audio feedback, but remove the hazard entirely by popping some cheap earpods in.
Give the video conference software a once-over before the interview: WebEx, Zoom, Skype, BlueJeans, KhakiTalk, ChinoPants, Hangouts—there are a hundreds of video conference apps floating around. Before the interview, take a minute to download the software, see if it plays nicely with your mic and camera.
Take time to… pause: Nervousness appears in many ways, but one of the most common is talking too fast and/or too much. Take a 3-5 second pause before and after every question. You’ll not only sound more thoughtful, the interviewer will have space to ask questions.
