Stop hedging

A couple years ago I saw Helen Rosner, a food writer at The New Yorker, speak at XOXO. Her talk on using a Dyson hair dryer to get crispy chicken skin is fascinating and vulnerable… no, really. She begins the talk by calling out a habit she, myself, and so many are guilty of: hedging.

Hedging is the subtle habit of devaluing yourself or your work in front of others. It’s especially common in interviews where nerves are high and you’re trying not to be defined by your work (because you know you can do better). As the creator, you see the gaps and the mistakes you’ve made, but most of the time others don’t… so stop guiding them to it!

Cut out the hedges. Sell them on the best parts of you.
